Julian Stockwin was sent at the age of fourteen to Indefatigable, a tough sea-training school. He joined the Royal Navy at fifteen before transferring to the Royal Australian Navy, where he served for eight years in the Far East, Antarctic waters and the South Seas. In Vietnam he saw active service in a carrier task force. After leaving the Navy (rated Petty Officer), Julian practised as an educational psychologist. He lived for some time in Hong Kong, where he was commissioned into the Royal Naval Reserve. He was awarded the MBE and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Julian Stockwin hat sich viel vorgenommen mit seinem elften Kydd Roman und war damit auch Erfolgreich. Die meisten seiner Bücher sind kleine Geschichtslektionen, da er es versteht, die fiktive Handlung seiner Romane in die tatsächlichen Ereignisse der napoleonischen Zeit einzubinden. Nachdem es aber in den letzten Romanen eher Randnotizen der Geschichte waren (wie die ersten versuche U-Boote im Seekrieg einzusetzen) hat er sich jetzt das Ereignis schlechthin vorgenommen. Die Schlacht von Trafalgar.Da Stockwins Held noch zu weit unten auf der Rangleiter der Kapitäne steht, kann er ihn nicht direkt an der Schlacht, die zwischen großen Linienschiffen ausgefochten wurde, teilnehmen lassen. Er muss sich also eines Kunstgriffs bedienen. Er schildert einen Teil der Handlung aus der Sicht eines jungen Fänrichs (Mr. Bowden) der in früheren Romanen mit Kydd unterwegs war und nun als Signalfähnrich auf der Victory die Ereignisse aus erster Hand erlebt.Der Detailreichtum der Erzählung zeigt dabei deutlich dass Stockwin bei der Vorbereitung des Buches praktisch uneingeschränkten Zugang zur Victory hatte.Die letzten Ausgaben der Reihe hatten mich etwas enttäuscht, seit Thomas Kydd ein Offizier mit eigenem Kommando ist wird es schwieriger für die Serie, sich von ähnlichen Reihen wie der großartigen Aubrey-Maturin-Serie von Patrick O'Brian abzusetzen, aber mit "Victory" ist Julian Stockwin wieder ein großer Wurf gelungen.
