Published in 2016, but still a very relevant series of discussions about many aspects of XaaS business models. Inevitably, there are many acronyms throughout the text, but the inclusion of numerous charts, tables and examples make the whole book something that can be read from cover-to-cover in a few hours.The authors have helpfully approached the topic from a transformation perspective, and have included many discussions of how organizations moved from traditional sales models to XaaS. This is useful, as launching greenfield XaaS services alone is a much more straightforward proposition. I also appreciated the in-depth coverage of strategies for pricing and value; and the chapters on Managed Services, and channel management.The evolution of the XaaS landscape is such that a refresh edition will be required within the next couple of years, but the fundamentals that are explored in the 1st edition are likely to be relevant for the next few years.
As technology is such a broad topic, the book is written broadly to apply to both software or physical products. As a playbook, the book is written for different groups within the business and the entire book is not needed to be read for every group. The accounting department does not need to understand the nuances of the service department.The book provides a good plan for devising a “long game†by providing guidance on developing a “complete package†for your customers. Much of the work is performed with a customer engagement manager which is a vague position which department this falls under.I like the book as not many books have been written on this mindset of implementing the technology long-term strategies. Even the book describes that the company implementing a long term plan won’t see returns until 3 years minimum which is difficult to swallow.
It's dry as hell, and sometimes repeats the same material over and over, but if you jump to the sections that pertain to you and your job -- this will function as a treasure map that can unlock your future in the Cloud business. The business world is on the edge of a huge change, and those who possess information like this will have a serious leg up on the competition.
This is probably my favorite book to date on Customer Success and "Technology as a Service" due to the amazing depth, detail, and the care taken to write it. Technology Services Industry Association is the leader in the Customer Success movement. I highly recommend this book and the videos they have made available on Youtube.
